RIVANNA Files 100th Patent, Expanding AI Ultrasound IP Estate

Charlottesville, Va. – September 22, 2026 -- RIVANNA has filed its 100th patent, U.S. application #64/080,862, covering an AI-powered ultrasound pathology detection pipeline for automated computer-aided diagnosis on its Accuro XV platform, marking 15 years of continuous intellectual-property development at the medical technology company.

Filing extends CADe/x diagnostic pipeline as portfolio grows 30% annually

The application describes a computer-aided detection algorithm for identifying pathology in volumetric ultrasound imaging captured by Accuro XV, a system advancing toward FDA clearance. Structured as a foundational filing, it is designed to anchor multiple downstream continuation applications as RIVANNA broadens claim coverage. The company's portfolio now spans more than 100 active issued and pending patents across 20-plus families, growing roughly 30% year over year, with protection extending across the United States, Europe, Japan and China.

Patent covers a unified pipeline from image capture to adaptive workflow control

The 100th filing is built around a diagnostic architecture linking image acquisition, enhancement, multi-level decision assistance at the frame, scan and subject level, and adaptive workflow control. Though centered on fracture detection, the architecture is designed for reuse across musculoskeletal, cardiac, lung and obstetric imaging. Custom multi-channel ultrasound inputs paired with RIVANNA's BoneEnhance algorithm improve image visibility for downstream AI detectors, while adaptive scan ordering and early stopping aim to cut the number of required views. The filing also claims self-supervised ultrasound pretraining methods that draw on large unlabeled datasets, reducing reliance on manual annotation.

IP estate binds hardware, AI models and clinical data into one protected system

RIVANNA's patent strategy targets integrated workflows rather than standalone algorithms. Coverage spans proprietary imaging hardware including a custom beamformer and volumetric probe architecture, AI layers such as BoneEnhance segmentation, CADe/x fracture detection and the technology underlying SpineNav-AI, and procedural infrastructure including SafeTrack instrument tracking. The estate is reinforced by one of the largest private musculoskeletal ultrasound datasets, sourced from eight-plus clinical sites, with freedom-to-operate diligence completed across key feature sets.

Shared claims support two FDA-cleared product lines across distinct markets

Foundational patent families protect the AI and 3D ultrasound architecture powering Accuro 3S, cleared for needle or catheter placement guidance, and Accuro XV, cleared for musculoskeletal imaging. New clinical indications extend the platform without rebuilding underlying claims, allowing RIVANNA to pursue additional applications from a single IP base.

Multi-site study expands from two to eight academic centers in four months

RIVANNA's Accuro XV clinical study grew from two to eight academic medical centers within four months, with ten systems deployed and more than 1,800 patients enrolled. A peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Emergency Medicine (Thom et al., 2026) found non-physician operators at UVA Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center acquired extremity images statistically indistinguishable in quality from board-certified emergency physicians, with mean scores of 3.6 versus 3.7 (p = 0.24) and more than 90% of scans rated adequate for diagnostic interpretation.

"Reaching one hundred patent filings is a structural milestone," said Will Mauldin, PhD, Co-founder and CEO of RIVANNA. "The same foundational claims protect both neuraxial anesthesia and fracture care. The 100th filing extends that protection into the automated pathology detection work conducted under our BARDA funding option."
