BiomeRenewables Wins US Patent for Owl-Inspired Turbine Tech

Toronto – September 22, 2026 -- The United States Patent and Trademark Office has allowed BiomeRenewables Inc.'s Application No. 18/942094, covering the serration structure behind its FeatherEdge® wind turbine blade technology, the Canadian cleantech firm announced.

Patent covers owl-inspired serration design that cuts turbine noise

The application, titled "STRUCTURE WITH SERRATIONS ADAPTED TO TRAVERSE A FLUID ENVIRONMENT," protects Biome's double-dip serration design modeled on the silent flight of owls. The technology reduces aerodynamic noise from wind turbine blades while increasing power output, according to the company.

Biome cites up to €1 million in added value per turbine for customers

Ryan Church, CEO and CTO of BiomeRenewables and a named inventor alongside Evan Chou, said the company is running FeatherEdge projects with customers across North America and Europe to demonstrate the commercial case. "For some customers we can add €1M of Net Present Value to the turbine," Church said.

Portfolio now exceeds 75 patents across aerodynamics and control systems

The newly allowed patent adds to a portfolio Biome describes as covering more than 75 patents in aerodynamic technologies, advanced manufacturing and control systems, active in roughly 90% of global wind markets. Other elements of the FeatherEdge technology are covered under additional granted and pending patent rights, the company said.

Church said the firm's biomimicry-based innovation strategy remains its core competitive advantage, adding that Biome protects its intellectual property fully against unauthorized use.
