Global – October 31, 2026 -- Only 21% of customer success (CS) leaders can tie AI to revenue outcomes, versus 57% of sales leaders, according to ChurnZero's 2026 Customer Success Leadership Study of 580 CS and revenue leaders.
Sales teams reach for AI first and measure it more consistently
Some 48% of sales teams turn to AI first when solving a problem, compared with 32% of CS teams. CS leaders also trail sales on measuring AI by function, including time saved and team efficiency.
Measurement is the widest gap: 63% of CS leaders have no consistent method to measure AI success, versus 20% of sales leaders.
Pressure to adopt AI reaches 91% of CS and support leaders
A recent Gartner survey cited in the study found 91% of customer success and support leaders are under pressure to implement AI. ChurnZero warns that this pressure can push teams to automate too many processes too quickly, without a strategy or a way to measure results.
ChurnZero CEO and co-founder YouMon Tsang expects the gap to persist: "Whatever sales is doing now is what customer success will be doing in 12-24 months."
ChurnZero advises starting with administrative workflows and tying AI to renewals
The company recommends that teams new to AI automate repetitive tasks such as building QBRs, researching account activity and writing emails. Prompts should be tested in small increments and piloted with small customer segments before wider rollout.
On measurement, ChurnZero advises CS leaders to define success metrics up front and consult sales leaders on what they track. It also advises separating AI spend from general technology spend and linking revenue-related AI activity to renewals, expansion and net revenue retention (NRR).
Customer success platforms already host AI tools in 45% of tech stacks
Customer success platforms (CSPs) are present in 45% of tech stacks. Among teams that have one, 62% name it a top-three tool for growing customer revenue.
ChurnZero says embedded AI can shorten testing and development time. Its native tools include agents that automate manual tasks, summarize activities and flag churn risks or expansion opportunities, as well as AI-driven reporting and assistants covering the full customer book.
