Novi, Mich. – September 09, 2026 -- Managed Medical Review Organization, Inc. (MMRO) has earned URAC's Artificial Intelligence in Health Care Accreditation (Version 1.0), the first accreditation program in the U.S. to set standards for responsible AI use and development in healthcare.
MMRO built a year-long AI governance program to meet URAC's framework
The program includes responsible-use policies, risk and impact assessments addressing AI-specific data security challenges, and testing and training requirements, with formal clinical oversight from MMRO's Vice President of Clinical Programs, Jen Mongeau, DHA, MBA, MSN, RN.
MMRO restricts AI from making clinical or adverse-action decisions
AI solutions will not be used to provide clinical judgments, determine medical necessity, issue clinical determinations or recommendations, replace regulatory or legal review, or act as an autonomous decisionmaker for adverse actions affecting members, claimants, patients, providers, or employees.
Douglas Minke, J.D., M.B.A., Vice President of Corporate Development and General Counsel and MMRO's Chief Information Security Officer, said the accreditation followed a full year of preparation. "We now have a governance program that lets us look at new AI technology through a clear lens: does it protect the information we review and the people we serve, and does it uphold the standard of clinical excellence our clients count on? If the answer is not yes to both, it does not move forward," he said.
New accreditation adds to MMRO's 15-year URAC Independent Review Organization status
The AI in Healthcare Accreditation complements MMRO's existing URAC accreditation as an Independent Review Organization (IRO), which the company has held for more than 15 years. MMRO said it will continue evaluating AI solutions to support efficient and clinically accurate service delivery for its clients while maintaining compliance with the new governance framework.
