Binghamton – October 01, 2026 -- McFarland-Johnson, Inc. (MJ) has secured the 15th spot on the 2026 Fortune Best Workplaces in EngineeringTM list, marking the employee-owned infrastructure firm's first appearance on the ranking.

Great Place To Work based the list on survey data from more than 14,000 engineering-sector employees

The ranking draws from Great Place To Work's broader 2025-2026 workforce study, which collected over 1.3 million confidential survey responses representing 7.3 million U.S. employees. Of those, more than 14,000 responses came from staff at Great Place To Work Certified companies within the engineering industry, forming the basis for the Fortune list.

MJ points to its Rising Leaders and mentoring programs as drivers of the recognition

The firm has built out structured career pathways, a Rising Leaders program, and a formal mentoring initiative over the past several years to support internal advancement. MJ, which operates as a 100 percent employee-owned company, cited these programs alongside an emphasis on open communication across all levels of the organization.

Ruthanne Bulman, Vice President and Human Resources Director, said employee owners credit the firm's culture of mutual support as central to its workplace identity.

MJ operates 28 offices serving infrastructure clients across the United States

Founded in Upstate New York in 1946, McFarland-Johnson provides planning, engineering, technology, environmental, and construction administration services to infrastructure clients nationwide. Chad Nixon, President and Chairman, attributed the Fortune recognition to the firm's workforce and its collaborative approach with clients.

Great Place To Work CEO Michael C. Bush said companies on the Best Workplaces in Engineering list demonstrate that investing in employees correlates with stronger financial performance across the sector.
