Info-Tech Blueprint Guides Firms to Choose Cost or Value Leadership

Arlington, Va. – September 24, 2026 -- Info-Tech Research Group has released a new blueprint, Position Your Brand Strategically as a Cost or Value Leader, offering a three-step framework to help organizations resolve strategic ambiguity between cost efficiency and premium differentiation.

Organizations Split Between Cost and Value Models Risk Getting 'Stuck in the Middle'

The blueprint states that cost leaders depend on efficiency, standardization, and disciplined cost control to serve price-sensitive markets, while value leaders rely on innovation, customer experience, and brand strength to command premium pricing. Firms that pursue both without clear tradeoffs risk lacking a sustainable cost advantage or meaningful differentiation, according to the research.

Info-Tech Director Warns Diluted Investments Confuse Customers

"When leaders do not explicitly choose between cost and value leadership, teams can pull in different directions, investments become diluted, and customers may struggle to understand what the brand stands for," said Nathalie Vezina, research director at Info-Tech Research Group.

Blueprint Sets Out Three-Step Diagnostic and Planning Process

Step one directs organizations to diagnose their current position by assessing operational costs, pricing, profit margins, innovation investment, standardization, product quality, and target customers. Step two requires leaders to benchmark cost structure and differentiation against competitors of similar capabilities and scale, rather than market leaders, to surface underserved customer needs or less crowded markets. Step three focuses on building an action plan around capability gaps: cost leaders may need to improve operational efficiency, reduce waste, or simplify supply chains, while value leaders may need to strengthen R&D, product differentiation, and customer experience.

Strategic Position Must Shape Organizational Culture, Firm Says

Info-Tech's research emphasizes that the chosen strategy should extend into culture: cost leadership demands accountability for efficiency and precise operations, while value leadership depends on creativity and sustained investment in differentiated offerings.
