Berlin – September 12, 2026 -- More than 40% of unnecessary emergency dispatches in Germany stem from patients' lack of awareness about alternative care options, according to a survey of rescue workers commissioned by the Left party's Bundestag faction, as the federal government advances a reform plan centered on stricter patient triage for the 112 emergency line.

The survey found that ambulance crews and paramedics identify unfamiliarity with non-emergency care channels -- such as general practitioners or pharmacies -- as the leading driver of avoidable 112 calls, cited in over 40% of responses. Cases range from patients calling about a tick bite to those reporting leg pain that has persisted for three weeks.
