SHERIDAN, WYOMING – April 15, 2025 - A groundbreaking leap in secure data transmission for next-gen broadband communication
In an era where digital transformation relies heavily on the seamless and secure flow of data, Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS, in collaboration with aconnic AG, has unveiled a significant innovation for the future of 5G and 6G networks. Through the “RealSec5G” project, the partners have developed a new TSN-MACsec IP core that marks a turning point in merging data security with real-time capabilities.
An integrated solution for tomorrow’s communication needs
The new TSN-MACsec IP core, developed as part of the “RealSec5G” initiative, uniquely combines two previously separate technologies: TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking) and MACsec (Media Access Control Security). This integration allows for both timely transmission of critical data and robust protection against cyber threats—all in a single, easy-to-implement system.
The aim of the project was clear: to build a cost-effective and scalable solution that fulfills the dual requirements of functional safety and data security. The result is a powerful IP core that operates on a practical FPGA platform, offering high-speed data handling in multigigabit networks.
“By combining the two Ethernet IP core standards TSN and MACsec, we have succeeded in efficiently combining functional security and data security,” said Dr. Alexander Noack, Division Director at Fraunhofer IPMS. “As a result, we are developing the basis for secure communication in 5G/6G networks and the future requirements regarding security requirements for post-quantum encryption.”
Real-world testing proves success under pressure
To ensure the reliability of the new IP core, the system was tested under realistic conditions, including simulated cyberattack scenarios. The results were impressive: not only did the platform maintain transmission speeds and accurate timestamps, but it also ensured correct and authenticated data transfers. This proves the solution's readiness for deployment in sensitive and high-demand environments.
A wide range of applications across industries
The successful demonstration of the TSN-MACsec IP core opens the door to a host of new possibilities for both private enterprises and public sector institutions. From traffic and energy systems to healthcare, administration, IT, and telecommunications, this innovative platform provides an added layer of assurance for any organization handling critical or time-sensitive data.
Thanks to its modular and interoperable design, the solution is highly adaptable and ready for broader application. The developers also see future opportunities to incorporate emerging technologies such as quantum encryption to address evolving cyber threats.
Looking ahead: Toward smarter, safer networks
With the RealSec5G project concluding on April 30, 2025, Fraunhofer IPMS and aconnic AG are already exploring future collaborations to enhance industrial communication solutions. This includes expanding into post-quantum cryptography, aligning security protocols with the demands of future technologies.
The innovation aligns with global efforts to enhance cybersecurity and digital sovereignty in communication technologies. Supported by the Federal Office for Information Security and funded through Germany’s economic stimulus program, RealSec5G sets a benchmark for secure communication infrastructures in the digital age.
