Marine Gear Makers Shift to Carbon Fiber, RTM and RIM Production

Global – October 24, 2026 -- Marine sporting goods manufacturers are replacing traditional materials and open-mold processes with carbon fiber composites, epoxy resins and closed-mold techniques, cutting production time, waste and cost while building lighter, more durable boats, surfboards, kayaks and personal watercraft.

Carbon fiber and epoxy raise hull and surfboard performance

Carbon fiber composites increase the rigidity of boat hulls and reduce their overall weight, which raises speed and fuel efficiency. In surfboard manufacturing, epoxy resins deliver better impact resistance and longevity than traditional materials.

Polymer seals, thermoplastics and FRP target harsh-water durability

Polymer-based seals made from hydrophobic materials improve sealing performance and durability in personal watercraft, protecting the integrity of engine compartments. Kayak producers favor thermoplastic composites because they withstand water sports without adding weight or losing durability. Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) has become a staple in marine propellers because of its corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.

RTM and RIM replace open-mold methods in RIB production

Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) deliver improved material consistency, reduced waste and faster production cycles than traditional processes, which translates into significant cost reductions.

In Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), RTM forms the structural hull. Resin is injected into a closed mold pre-loaded with fiberglass, carbon fiber or other composite fibers. The controlled injection ensures consistent resin flow and distribution, eliminating air pockets and potential weak points.

RIM produces smaller, more complex parts such as consoles and seat bases. Precise control over injection parameters yields robust, lightweight components that support boat performance and fuel efficiency.

Producers cut overhead and scale output faster

The technologies streamline operations and reduce overhead tied to storage and material handling. Manufacturers can also adjust and scale production quickly to meet shifting market demand, improving service responsiveness and customer satisfaction.
