Ann Arbor, Mich. – September 09, 2026 -- ISO officially released the revised ISO 14001:2026 environmental management standard on April 15, 2026, replacing ISO 14001:2015 and giving certified organizations until April 15, 2029 to complete their transition.
New standard folds 2024 climate amendment directly into core requirements
The revision incorporates the climate change amendment issued in 2024 into the body of the standard rather than treating it as a supplementary clause. It also aligns more closely with ISO's Harmonized Structure, a move designed to ease integration with other management system standards used by certified organizations.
Revised standard expands change-management and life cycle requirements
ISO 14001:2026 broadens requirements for planning and managing organizational change and places greater weight on environmental context, interested parties, and life cycle considerations. A revised Annex A adds guidance intended to clarify implementation for environmental management system (EMS) practitioners.
Certified organizations face a three-year window to close compliance gaps
Companies currently certified to ISO 14001:2015 must complete a gap analysis against the new requirements, reassess environmental risks and life cycle impacts, and evaluate how climate change affects their organizational context and stakeholder expectations. Documentation, procedures, and internal audit programs will need updates, alongside training for leadership, EMS professionals, and internal auditors ahead of the 2029 deadline.
Omnex rolls out one-day transition course for certified auditors
Ann Arbor, Michigan-based Omnex has introduced ISO 14001:2026 Transition Training, a one-day course allowing currently certified Internal Auditors and Lead Auditors to upgrade their credentials to the new standard without repeating full auditor training. The program covers the standard's structural changes, climate-related requirements, expanded life cycle provisions, and updates to internal audit and management review processes.
The course also walks participants through building a practical transition plan, including gap analysis, documentation updates, personnel training, and preparation for transition audits.
