Frankfurt (Oder) – September 10, 2026 -- Dr. Dominik Treffer, chief physician of the Clinic for Acute and Emergency Medicine at Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) since June 2026, has passed the examination for the European Specialist in Emergency Medicine, adding an internationally recognized credential to his qualifications as a specialist in anesthesiology with additional certifications in emergency medicine and clinical acute and emergency medicine.
Germany still lacks a standalone emergency medicine specialty recognized across many European countries
Unlike numerous European countries with an independent emergency medicine specialty, Germany has no equivalent formal credential. Care for acutely ill and injured patients in the country's central emergency departments is currently handled by physicians from a range of different medical specialties, making structured additional qualification in clinical emergency medicine increasingly significant.
Certification remains rare among physicians in Brandenburg state
The European certification is held by only a small number of physicians in Brandenburg, according to the hospital. For Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder), the qualification marks both a personal milestone for its new chief physician and a signal of intent to strengthen regional emergency care capacity.
"Emergency medicine is a specialized yet enormously versatile field of medicine. Care in a central emergency department requires broad knowledge, rapid decision-making and close collaboration across disciplines," said Dr. Treffer.
New leadership pair aims to boost training pipeline for emergency medicine staff
Dr. Treffer and Dr. Ronny Enk began as co-chief physicians of the emergency department in June 2026, a leadership change the hospital frames as an impulse for further professionalizing and raising the visibility of clinical emergency medicine at the site. Treffer stated he intends to use the added qualification to attract colleagues to emergency medicine training and position the department as a competitive training environment.
New regional symposium launches October 10, 2026 to convene emergency responders
The two chief physicians plan to establish the 1st Ostbrandenburg Emergency & Rescue (ODER) symposium at Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) on October 10, 2026, bringing together professionals from emergency medical services, fire services and emergency medicine for technical presentations and exchange. Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) is one of five sites operated by RHÖN-KLINIKUM AG and serves as an academic teaching hospital of Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
