Fujitsu Unveils World's First Diamond-Spin Quantum Computer Prototype

Kawasaki, Japan – September 11, 2026 -- Fujitsu has developed the world's first working prototype of a diamond-spin quantum computer that integrates tin-vacancy (SnV) centers into photonic integrated circuits, a milestone the company says advances the path toward scalable quantum systems.

Prototype runs at -271.6°C, warmer than superconducting rivals

The device operates at -271.6°C, a higher temperature threshold than the -273.13°C required by typical superconducting quantum computers. Fujitsu demonstrated in a test environment that the prototype can be operated via its Hybrid Quantum Computing Platform without requiring specialist quantum expertise, a factor that could lower operational barriers for enterprise adopters.

Delft partnership since 2020 underpins the breakthrough

The prototype builds on joint research launched in 2020 between Fujitsu, Delft University of Technology, and QuTech, the quantum technology research institute affiliated with TU Delft. The diamond-spin approach is being pursued for its high fidelity and efficient optical connectivity, both considered critical for modular quantum architectures capable of scaling beyond current qubit counts.

Fujitsu targets 1,000 logical qubits by fiscal 2035

Vivek Mahajan, CTO of Fujitsu's System Platform division, said the diamond-spin method could eventually be combined with superconducting quantum computers to extend their computational capacity for more complex workloads. Fujitsu has set a roadmap to reach a 250 logical qubit system by fiscal 2030, followed by a 1,000 logical qubit system by fiscal 2035, spanning both software and hardware development.

QuTech director calls scalability demonstration a 'long journey'

Kees Eijkel, General Director of QuTech at Delft University of Technology, said the prototype marks a major milestone in the six-year collaboration but cautioned that proving the scalability expected of diamond-spin quantum computing remains an extended and difficult undertaking. Fujitsu and QuTech said they intend to deepen their partnership to pursue further development of the technology.
