Cloudflare's Project Galileo shields 2,900+ at-risk sites for free

Global – October 24, 2026 -- Cloudflare provides free cyber security protection to more than 2,900 vulnerable Internet properties through Project Galileo, its program for human rights, civil society, journalism and democracy organizations targeted by DDoS and other cyber attacks.

Cloudflare launched Project Galileo in 2014 after attacks on vulnerable targets

Founded in 2014, the program was a response to devastating cyber attacks against humanitarian organizations, civil society groups and human rights defenders. Cloudflare notes that these organizations often face powerful, entrenched opponents while operating on limited budgets.

Journalists, social activists and minority groups flooded with malicious traffic risk being knocked offline.

Partner organizations decide which applicants receive protection

Cloudflare works with free speech, public interest and civil society organizations to identify at-risk websites. It accepts any proposed recipient brought to it by, or approved by, one of its trusted partners. Cloudflare says relying on these decision-makers brings civil society expertise into the program and keeps it free of the company's own biases.

Inclusion does not require, and should not be read as, endorsement by all partner organizations. Once a partner approves an applicant, Cloudflare extends its security benefits.

Cloudflare withholds participant identities without explicit permission

To protect participants from potential backlash, Cloudflare does not reveal which sites take part in Project Galileo unless it has explicit permission.

Participants receive Cloudflare Business plan benefits

Project Galileo participants get the benefits of Cloudflare's Business plan. The company directs them to its Impact Portal for feature details and has published its first report on cyberattacks targeting the civil society organizations the program protects.
