Hong Kong – September 30, 2026 -- City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has risen to 70th place globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, its best-ever result, advancing three places from the previous year.
CityUHK retains world No. 1 in Industry pillar for fourth straight year
The university scored a perfect 100 in the "Industry" pillar, securing the top global position for the fourth consecutive year. The metric evaluates patent development, technology commercialisation and the strength of institutional innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems.
Research Quality pillar jumps into global top 50
CityUHK posted across-the-board score gains in the three core pillars of Teaching, Research Environment and Research Quality. The Research Quality pillar advanced into the world's top 50, supported by full marks across several key indicators. Scores for both "Teaching Reputation" and "Research Reputation" rose for the second consecutive year.
University holds Hong Kong's top spot in International Outlook for ninth year
CityUHK remained first in Hong Kong in the "International Outlook" category for the ninth consecutive year. THE has named CityUHK the "Most International University in the World" for three consecutive years running.
THE rankings assess 2,297 institutions across 118 countries
The THE World University Rankings 2027 evaluated 2,297 institutions in 118 countries and territories against 17 indicators grouped into five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry and International Outlook. Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at THE, said the results point to a structural shift in global higher education, with academic strength moving from West to East. THE's official release also noted that Hong Kong's higher education sector overall continues to perform strongly, with CityUHK reaching its highest-ever ranking position.
