Beverly, Mass. – September 11, 2026 -- Axcelis Technologies (Nasdaq: ACLS) will invest $35 million to build a new ion implantation equipment manufacturing facility in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, Korea, with production slated to begin in the second half of 2028.
Axcelis expands Korean manufacturing footprint with 200,000-square-foot plant
The Pyeongtaek site will span approximately 200,000 square feet of gross floor area, integrating warehousing, Class 1,000 and Class 10,000 cleanrooms, and a dedicated training center. The company said the design draws on nearly 50 years of semiconductor capital equipment manufacturing experience to create a lean production environment aimed at faster, more flexible customer response.
CEO frames investment as response to growing global chip demand
President and CEO Russell Low said the project reflects Axcelis' commitment to strengthening global high-volume manufacturing infrastructure. Ion implanters remain among the most critical tools in front-end semiconductor manufacturing, and the new facility builds on the company's existing presence in Korea to support rising worldwide chip demand.
Government ceremony in Washington precedes October groundbreaking
Robert Mahoney, Executive Vice President of Global Operations, took part in an Investment Declaration Ceremony in Washington, D.C. last week alongside representatives from Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). A groundbreaking ceremony for the Pyeongtaek facility is scheduled for October 20, 2026.
Two-year build timeline targets second-half 2028 production start
Axcelis expects the facility to begin production in the second half of 2028, giving the company roughly two years to complete construction and equipment installation following the October groundbreaking.
