Advantech Unveils ASR-D501 AI Computer for Autonomous Drones

Taipei – – September 30, 2026 -- Advantech has launched the ASR-D501, a compact AI companion computer built to power autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles, delivering up to 12 TOPS of AI performance within a sub-10W power envelope.

Qualcomm QCS6490 chipset enables onboard AI processing without constant cloud reliance

The ASR-D501 runs on the Qualcomm QCS6490, combining CPU, GPU, and NPU compute to handle object detection, semantic segmentation, visual inspection, obstacle awareness, vision-based localization, and sensor-fusion tasks directly on the drone. By offloading perception and mission-level workloads from the flight controller, the platform lets the primary controller focus exclusively on flight stabilization and actuator control. Supported navigation capabilities include VIO, SLAM, and GNSS-denied operation.

Five camera interfaces and multi-protocol connectivity target complex UAV sensor stacks

The unit integrates five 4-lane MIPI-CSI interfaces for RGB, monochrome, stereo, or high-resolution cameras, alongside a 2.5 GbE port and two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C connections. Onboard CAN FD, UART, I2C, and GPIO interfaces support LiDAR, depth cameras, IMUs, flight controllers, ESCs, and battery-management systems. For beyond-visual-line-of-sight missions, the ASR-D501 adds Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth, and 4G/5G cellular via M.2 expansion with an onboard Nano-SIM, covering telemetry, command-and-control, and video transmission needs.

Advantech Robotic Suite links ROS 2 applications to PX4 and ArduPilot flight stacks

The ASR-D501 ships with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and the Advantech Robotic Suite for Drone, a pre-integrated development environment connecting ROS 2 applications to flight-controller ecosystems through MAVLink, MAVSDK, and MAVROS. Validated reference workflows cover AI perception, visual localization, sensor fusion, mapping, object tracking, and path planning, cutting integration time between hardware bring-up and autonomous-flight development.

Industrial-grade specs target production deployment in field conditions

Measuring 100 x 60 mm and weighing approximately 50g without a heatsink, the fanless board operates on 5-12V DC input across a -20°C to 70°C range, withstands 3.5 Grms vibration, and includes industrial-grade ESD protection and lockable connectors for long-term deployment.

Advantech plans mid-range Qualcomm CQ8-based UAV platforms for 2027

The ASR-D501 extends Advantech's UAV computing lineup, which already includes OSM- and SMARC-based system-on-module designs and IQ9075M-based platforms for higher AI performance and advanced sensor integration. The company confirmed plans to add mid-range Qualcomm CQ8-based solutions to the portfolio in 2027.
