Fulda – October 27, 2026 -- WEMAG, the family-run tool and machinery distributor from Fulda, is marking its 90th anniversary in 2026 with more than 200 employees, six locations in Germany and a range of roughly five million articles, and is now investing in robotic order picking and automated logistics.
Merchant Adolf Ruland founded WEMAG Werkzeug- und Maschinengesellschaft on May 5, 1936. WEMAG GmbH & Co. KG is now run by the fourth generation. Helmut Schaus, the founder's son-in-law, took over management in 1948, followed by his son Joachim Schaus in 1972. Christopher Schaus joined in 2004, entered management in 2010 and received the symbolic company key from his father in 2018.
WEMAG operates six German sites and a network of more than 30 partners
The company has branches in Fulda, Aschaffenburg, Bochum, Kassel, Siegen and Zella-Mehlis. More than 30 sales representatives and trading partners extend its reach from Europe to Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
E-Business unit in Siegen moves WEMAG from tool trading into procurement services
Beyond tools, machinery, workwear safety gear and workshop equipment, WEMAG now sells process services: technology selection, tailored supply concepts and digital ordering systems integrated into customer operations. Its E-Business division runs an "E-Fabrik" demonstration site in Siegen, showing dispensing machines, digital storage and supply systems, e-procurement platforms and tool management.
Machine builder Trützschler developed a company-specific digital procurement process with WEMAG, which the source says considerably simplified ordering, replenishment planning and internal workflows.
Two acquisitions in two years add production capacity and a new branch
WEMAG acquired a Fulda manufacturing business in 2024, now trading as WEMAG Metallbearbeitung. It machines components on about 10,000 square meters for sectors ranging from general machine building to automotive and aviation. In 2025, WEMAG took over tool dealer Werkzeug Weber in Aschaffenburg.
Logistics center shipping 1,000 parcels a day is slated for robotic picking
The logistics center, opened in 2005, currently dispatches about 1,000 parcels daily. WEMAG plans modern packaging technology, digital control systems and, in future, robot-assisted picking to meet demands for faster delivery and a broader range. A planned move to a new site within Fulda is intended to provide the extra space. Managing partner Christopher Schaus names digitalization, artificial intelligence, logistics and robotics as the priority investment areas.
Long-tenured staff and apprenticeships underpin customer relationships
Employee tenures of 30, 40 and even 50 years are recorded at the company. Leisure-facility manufacturer Josef Wiegand GmbH & Co. KG has been a customer for 46 years, and the same field sales representative served the account for 44 of them. WEMAG trains apprentices in wholesale and foreign trade management, e-commerce, IT systems management, warehouse logistics, and industrial and cutting mechanics.
Rooftop solar plant generates 776,000 kWh a year and EcoVadis rates WEMAG in top 15%
A photovoltaic system of just under 750 kilowatt peak at the Metallbearbeitung site produces around 776,000 kilowatt-hours annually, partly used to charge WEMAG's growing electric vehicle fleet. In 2025, the company earned an EcoVadis silver medal, placing it among the best 15 percent of companies assessed. WEMAG also supports more than 100 clubs, organizations and initiatives through donations, sponsoring and in-kind contributions.
