Gothenburg – September 15, 2026 -- Volvo Group will develop an energy park near its planned Mariestad battery cell production site, initially providing approximately 70 MW/260 MWh of battery storage capacity, making it one of the largest energy parks in Sweden.

The energy park will grow along two parallel tracks: a large-scale battery storage facility using Volvo Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) from Volvo Energy, and a future test bed for developing new energy solutions. The facility is expected to become operational during 2027.
Storage facility to support grid stability in a region with high Swedish industrial energy consumption
Volvo Group has most of its Swedish production concentrated in the region, and the energy park will add capacity to support grid resilience there. The park will also offer flexibility services, allowing stored energy to flow back into the local grid to strengthen energy access when demand rises.
Test bed will serve as customer demonstration site for real-scale energy business cases
Beyond grid support, the site will function as a demonstration platform where Volvo Group and its customers and partners can test and advance energy solutions and offerings at real scale.
Lars Stenqvist ties the initiative to Sweden's decarbonization ambitions
"This initiative is a natural next step in the development of our Mariestad facility and reflects our vision of a more robust, flexible and sustainable energy system," said Lars Stenqvist, responsible for the development of the Mariestad site at Volvo Group. He added that the park will support both Volvo Group's and Sweden's decarbonization ambitions while serving as a test bed to advance customer energy solutions.
Battery cell plant near the energy park is scheduled to begin production after 2030
As previously announced, Volvo Group is establishing a large-scale battery cell production plant near the planned energy park to meet growing demand for battery-electric heavy-duty vehicles and machines. Combined with Volvo Group's existing powertrain plant in nearby Skövde, the battery cell plant and energy park will strengthen Volvo's industrial and logistics cluster in the region, creating opportunities for shared infrastructure and capabilities.
