Lakewood, Colo. – October 19, 2026 -- Versiti has become the 10th U.S. blood center to adopt Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies' Reveos Automated Blood Processing System, adding automated platelet recovery from whole blood donations across five states.
Reveos and Lumia software lift whole blood platelet capacity
Paired with the Lumia Software Platform, Reveos will let the Milwaukee-based nonprofit produce more platelets from whole blood. Versiti serves hospitals and patients in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared Reveos in 2023. Terumo BCT says it is the only whole blood automation device available in the U.S. that separates whole blood into red blood cells, plasma and platelets in one fully automated centrifugation cycle.
Automation replaces manual, multi-step separation
Platelet separation from whole blood has relied on manual, multi-step processes that demand significant hands-on time and can introduce variability. Reveos automates balancing, centrifugation, expression, sealing and data capture, eliminating more than half of the 26 manual steps. Terumo BCT says the system has been used globally for more than a decade.
Versiti adds whole blood recovery to supplement apheresis collections
Versiti already collects platelets directly from donors through apheresis. The new capability gives it added flexibility to supplement those collections as hospital demand for platelets grows. Platelets support patients undergoing cancer treatment, surgery and emergency care, but their short shelf life makes supply a persistent challenge for blood centers nationwide.
Karen Smith, Vice President of Blood Production and Distribution at Versiti, said Reveos helps the organization make more of each donation and produce platelets more efficiently.
Maura Lienesch, Vice President, Commercial at Terumo BCT, said Versiti's five-state reach makes the deployment a notable milestone among the 10 U.S. blood centers now using Reveos.
