Nashville – October 27, 2026 -- TransCore has been selected by the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) for a lifecycle replacement of the roadside toll collection system on the Selmon Expressway, covering 18 miles and 17 toll zones.
TransCore replaces aging roadside infrastructure across 17 toll zones
The award extends a partnership with THEA that spans nearly two decades. TransCore will replace existing equipment with its next-generation tolling technology to increase automation, system visibility and long-term performance. The integrated roadside platform is designed to deliver consistent toll collection across the corridor and give THEA more insight into system activity.
VCATS machine-vision system will track vehicles through tolling zones
TransCore's VCATS (Vehicle Classification and Tracking System) uses machine vision and artificial intelligence to detect and continuously track vehicles in the tolling zone. It creates toll transactions through integrated classification and license plate recognition.
SmartPass adds credential-based tolling capability for THEA
The deployment includes TransCore's SmartPass capability, which supports credential-based tolling and expanded account management options. THEA is evaluating future mobility and customer service initiatives, and SmartPass gives it additional flexibility for them.
New equipment will go onto lanes added by THEA capacity projects
TransCore will also install roadside tolling equipment on lanes being added through THEA's ongoing roadway capacity improvement projects. Coordinating the tolling rollout with those lanes is intended to keep collection operations consistent as additional capacity comes online.
TransCore President and CEO Whitt Hall called THEA a "valued customer for nearly two decades" and said the modernization combines proven technology with an understanding of THEA's operations.
