St. Louis – November 02, 2026 -- Spire Missouri has filed a rate case with the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) that would raise the average residential gas bill by about 11% in western Missouri and 15% in eastern Missouri if approved as filed.
Western and eastern Missouri face different increases
Assuming current natural gas market conditions, the average western Missouri residential bill would climb about $10 per month. In eastern Missouri, the average residential bill would rise about $13 per month. New rates would take effect next fall, because the PSC typically completes its review within about eleven months of filing.
Spire Missouri serves more than 1.2 million customers in the state. President Steve Mills said the utility's focus is on delivering "affordable natural gas service" safely and reliably.
Spire cites nearly $808 million in system investment
Spire says it has invested nearly $808 million to maintain and modernize its Missouri distribution system since its last rate case. The utility says the spending improves safety and reliability and reduces emissions. It also says new infrastructure lowers ongoing maintenance costs.
During fiscal 2026, Spire supported 24 publicly announced economic development projects in Missouri. Those projects represent nearly $537 million in investment and more than 1,400 jobs. Spire says access to natural gas played a key role in securing many of them.
Spire points to a gas cost advantage over electricity
Citing American Gas Association data, Spire says households that use natural gas for heating, clothes drying and water heating save more than $1,000 annually compared with electricity users. The company says electricity in Missouri costs more than twice as much as natural gas.
Spire connected customers to nearly $14 million in assistance
In fiscal 2026, Spire connected Missouri customers with nearly $14 million in federal, state and Spire energy assistance funding. Programs for customers with higher energy burdens include DollarHelp, Payment Arrangements, LIHEAP, the Customer Charge Waiver Program, the Payment Partner Program, Critical Medical Needs and Budget Billing.
