Beijing – September 08, 2026 -- Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) is developing more than 1.8 GW of wind capacity in Egypt while breaking ground on a new energy storage manufacturing facility, deepening its role in the country's renewable energy buildout.
Wind portfolio exceeds 1.8 GW across three projects in the Gulf of Suez and Ras Ghareb
The company's operational and under-construction wind assets include the 500MW Amunet Gulf of Suez Wind Project, now fully online, alongside the 1.1GW Gulf of Suez Wind Project and the 202.5MW Ras Ghareb Wind Project, both currently under construction. During Amunet's build, POWERCHINA managed temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, strong winds and sand erosion by adjusting concrete-pouring schedules and monitoring wind speeds during turbine installation. The project secured its acceptance certificate ahead of contractual deadline and received the 2025 RoSPA Health and Safety Award.
Sungrow's first Middle East and Africa battery storage plant breaks ground in Ain Sokhna
In August 2026, POWERCHINA began construction of a 50,000-square-meter energy storage manufacturing facility for Sungrow in Ain Sokhna. The plant is set to become Sungrow's first battery energy storage system manufacturing base in the Middle East and Africa region, adding local production capacity to Egypt's clean energy supply chain and supporting workforce training.
POWERCHINA has generated over 12,000 jobs in Egypt since entering the market in 2012
The company's Egypt operations have created more than 2,000 direct jobs and over 10,000 indirect jobs since 2012. More than 350 professionals have been trained across quality control, health, safety and environment, social management, materials management and logistics roles. POWERCHINA works with dozens of Egyptian suppliers, subcontractors and consultants spanning engineering services, construction materials, legal and tax consultancy.
Local subcontractor Elalamya has expanded work with POWERCHINA across three wind projects since 2023
Elalamya General Contracting, engaged initially as a civil works subcontractor for the 500MW Amunet project in 2023, has since extended its partnership to the Gulf of Suez and Ras Ghareb wind projects. The company's head, Mahmoud, described the collaboration as a strong working relationship expected to continue.
The expansion into storage and local manufacturing marks a shift for POWERCHINA in Egypt from standalone project delivery toward a broader clean-energy ecosystem spanning generation, storage and industrial capacity, aligning with Egypt's national energy strategy as China and Egypt mark 70 years of diplomatic relations.
