NEW YORK – September 04, 2026 -- NYU Langone Health has appointed William Gordon Frankle, MD, MBA, as chair of the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, effective September.
Frankle succeeds Marmar after 17-year tenure
Dr. Frankle takes over from Charles R. Marmar, MD, who completed 17 years as chair and will continue as director of the Center for Precision Psychiatry within NYU Grossman School of Medicine's faculty. Frankle previously served as vice chair of the department and chief of psychiatry service at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and holds the title of professor of psychiatry.
Brooklyn behavioral health program reaches 165,000 annual visits
Under Frankle's leadership, the behavioral health program at the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone grew into one of the largest in New York State, recording approximately 165,000 patient visits annually. He led the integration of Brooklyn's psychiatric service into the department while driving growth in clinical operations, quality, and financial performance.
Enhanced Treatment and Recovery program wins APA Silver Award in 2024
Frankle launched a psychiatry residency program emphasizing community psychiatry and developed the Enhanced Treatment and Recovery program for patients with serious mental illness, which received the American Psychiatric Association's Silver Award for Psychiatric Services Achievement in 2024. The Brooklyn psychiatric service has consistently ranked above the 90th percentile nationally in patient satisfaction while expanding care for patients with serious mental illness and substance use disorders.
Department ranks No. 8 nationally, No. 6 in NIH psychiatric grant funding
The Department of Psychiatry is ranked No. 8 in the country (tied) by U.S. News and World Report and No. 6 nationally for National Institutes of Health psychiatric grant funding, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. Its psychiatry residency ranks No. 5 in Doximity's Residency Navigator, and its inpatient psychiatric units carry Joint Commission accreditation.
New chair brings decade of PET imaging research on schizophrenia
Frankle earned his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed his adult psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital, followed by a research fellowship in schizophrenia at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University. A 10-year member of NYU Langone, he has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers on dopamine and GABA transmission in schizophrenia using positron emission tomography, and is currently funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
