Helsinki – September 03, 2026 -- Helsinki will host two major design events in close succession this year, with Helsinki Design Week running 28 August to 6 September 2026 and Habitare, the Nordic region's leading furniture and interior fair, taking place 2-6 September 2026 at Messukeskus, the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre.

The festival spreads across studios, cultural institutions and public spaces citywide under the 2026 theme 'The Oncoming Other,' focused on encounters between people, ideas and places. Habitare runs its Messukeskus program alongside city-centre showrooms under the theme 'Plot Twists,' emphasizing unpredictability and shifts in direction as design drivers.
City of Helsinki commits to a two-year design collaboration centered on Aleksanterinkatu
A new HDW Lab will open on Aleksanterinkatu, organizing workshops that bring decision-makers and city residents together to plan the future of the city centre. The partnership also sustains the Helsinki Design Award, presented annually since 2022 to individuals, teams or organisations advancing Helsinki's built environment and cityscape.
UNESCO inscribed five Helsinki Aalto sites onto its World Heritage List in July 2026
Finlandia Hall, the House of Culture, the National Pensions Institute (Kela), Studio Aalto and The Aalto House joined the list as part of Aalto Works, a 13-building series across Finland designed by Aino, Elissa and Alvar Aalto. The sites merge modernist architectural ideals with human-centred design principles that prioritised societal needs and wellbeing.
Kari Korkman, founder of Helsinki Design Week, said the creative sector strengthens through networks connecting creators, audiences, funders, media and city institutions, building resilience to adapt and imagine the future collectively. Tanja Pasila, Business Lead at Habitare, said the fair aims to generate business, growth and international visibility for Finnish design through direct industry encounters.
