Newport Township, Pa. – October 06, 2026 -- Fit Energy has secured zoning approval to convert a former mining and quarry site in Newport Township, Luzerne County, into a fuel cell power generation and data center complex, with engineering and permitting now underway ahead of construction.
Township commissioners approved zoning for both uses in August 2026
The approval clears the way for Fit Energy to redevelop previously disturbed industrial land rather than greenfield forest or farmland. Natural gas fuel cells supplied by Connecticut-based FuelCell Energy, Inc. will generate on-site power under a strategic agreement with Fit Energy, producing electricity through an electrochemical process without combustion.
On-site generation cuts reliance on the regional power grid
The fuel cell system is designed to lower noise and emissions impact on surrounding homes compared with conventional combustion-based generation. Site plans incorporate setbacks, landscaping and screening to limit visibility from nearby properties and local roads.
Project adds power, gas, water and sewer infrastructure investment
The buildout is expected to expand utility capacity serving Newport Township beyond the project site itself. Multi-year construction is projected to generate employment for contractors, skilled trades and suppliers, while permanent operations will require staff in facility management, maintenance, security and technology roles once the site is active.
Township expects new tax revenue for schools and county budgets
Fit Energy is negotiating a Community Benefits Agreement with Newport Township to formalize additional investment tied to community priorities. Newport Township Manager Joe Hillan said the commissioners have worked proactively with Fit Energy to address community concerns while promoting job creation and new local tax revenue.
"We're committed to being transparent, answering questions and building a long-term relationship with Newport Township as we move through the next stages of this project," said Joel Leonoff, Chief Executive Officer of Fit Energy.
Fit Energy plans a public information session for residents
Details on the session's date, time and location will be posted on the project's dedicated website, where residents can also submit questions and track updates through permitting, construction and operations.
