Johns Creek, Ga. – October 07, 2026 -- Boehringer Ingelheim has secured U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for a new Quarterable Snap-Tab design of PREVICOX (firocoxib) Chewable Tablets, enabling veterinarians to prescribe the canine pain medication to dogs as small as seven pounds.
Double-scored tablets expand dosing precision for veterinarians
The redesigned 57 mg and 227 mg tablets feature double scoring that allows division into quarters, giving veterinarians more granular, weight-based dosing options for dogs across a broader size range. PREVICOX is a COX-2 selective NSAID approved for controlling pain and inflammation from osteoarthritis and for postoperative pain following soft-tissue and orthopedic surgery in dogs.
Packaging overhaul cuts waste and material use
Once divided, quartered tablets can be stored for up to one month in their container, reducing waste and simplifying supply logistics. The PREVICOX bottle is shifting to an industry-standard round, taller format, and the cotton filler is being eliminated for efficiency. The push-and-turn child-resistant closure, full-tablet dose strengths, bottle counts, and formulation remain unchanged.
Rollout begins with 227 mg and 57 mg, 60-count presentations
Boehringer Ingelheim said the updated design will be introduced progressively through 2026 and 2027, starting with the PREVICOX 227 mg x 60 count and 57 mg x 60 count packages. Dr. Russ Drury, Executive Director of Veterinary Professional Services at Boehringer Ingelheim, said the tablet redesign allows easier dose tailoring intended to improve outcomes for a wider range of dogs.
As a class, cyclooxygenase inhibitory NSAIDs including PREVICOX carry risks of gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver side effects, and the company advises evaluating dogs for pre-existing conditions and current medications before and during treatment.
