Emerson Completes AspenTech Buyout After Portfolio Overhaul

Global – October 31, 2026 -- Emerson completed the acquisition of all outstanding AspenTech common stock it did not already own in March 2025, the latest step in a portfolio reshaping that began with an all-cash $1.6 billion deal in 2020.

Emerson built a 55% AspenTech stake in 2022 before moving to full ownership

In May 2022, Emerson and AspenTech closed the combination of Emerson's industrial software businesses, OSI Inc. and its Geological Simulation Software business, with AspenTech. The deal created what the companies called a global industrial software leader, "new AspenTech." Emerson held 55% on a fully diluted basis, and AspenTech shareholders held the remaining 45%.

In November 2024, Emerson proposed to acquire all remaining AspenTech shares. It also began exploring strategic alternatives, including a cash sale, for its Safety & Productivity segment.

Emerson sold climate and consumer businesses between 2021 and 2024

Emerson completed the sale of its InSinkErator business to Whirlpool Corporation in November 2022. In May 2023, it closed the sale of a majority stake in Climate Technologies to funds managed by Blackstone. In August 2024, it sold its remaining interests in the Copeland joint venture, formerly Emerson Climate Technologies.

Earlier exits included an agreement in March 2022 to sell Therm-O-Disc sensing and protection technologies to an affiliate of One Rock Capital Partners, LLC. In July 2021, Emerson agreed to sell Daniel Measurement and Control, a fiscal flow and energy measurement provider for oil and gas, to Turnspire Capital Partners. Emerson said that sale reflected a priority to focus management attention on data-rich, software-enabled technologies in diversified, high-growth end markets.

Acquisitions since 2020 targeted software, automation and test and measurement

Emerson agreed to buy OSI Inc., an operations technology provider serving the global power industry, for $1.6 billion in cash in August 2020. In October 2020, it announced an agreement to acquire Progea Group, a provider of IIoT, plant analytics, HMI and SCADA technologies.

In December 2021, Emerson bought Mita-Teknik, founded in 1969, in an all-cash transaction. The company supplies control automation for wind turbines and wind farms. Emerson acquired life sciences software provider Fluxa in June 2022.

In August 2023, Emerson announced definitive agreements for two further deals:

  • Afag: an electric linear motion, feeding and handling automation specialist. The deal strengthens Emerson in factory automation, one of its four priority adjacencies, and pairs Afag's electric motion with Emerson's pneumatic motion technology.
  • Flexim: a clamp-on ultrasonic flow measurement provider for liquids, gases and steam. It complements Emerson's existing flow measurement offering.

In October 2023, Emerson completed the acquisition of NI, extending its technology into test and measurement automation.
