Berlin – October 29, 2026 -- Airbnb is tying a $0.10 donation to every completed stay as part of a funding model meant to give its nonprofit arm Airbnb.org $500 million over five years, alongside additional donations. The money is meant to support Airbnb.org's target of one million free nights of temporary housing per year.
Donation applies to every stay without changing guest or host economics
Airbnb will pass $0.10 of its revenue from each stay to Airbnb.org. The company says guest prices stay the same and host payouts are not reduced. Neither guests nor hosts have to sign up or take any action.
Stays cancelled before check-in are excluded, as are bookings of Experiences and Services.
Airbnb.org's disaster caseload has grown from 8 events in 2023 to more than 200 this year
Airbnb.org has placed more than 250,000 people into 1.6 million free nights since Airbnb set it up as an independent nonprofit in 2020. The idea dates to 2012, when a host housed people displaced by Hurricane Sandy. Airbnb.org has provided free temporary housing in response to more than 200 disasters this year, against eight in 2023.
CEO Brian Chesky said everyone who books on Airbnb will now help provide shelter to people when they need it most.
Funding extends Airbnb.org into medical travel, domestic violence and veteran care
The $500 million, drawn from Airbnb funding and further donations, will finance three expansion areas:
- Medical travel: By the end of 2026, Airbnb.org will support families traveling for medical reasons in more than 20 countries. Partners include the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia, Instituto Beaba in Brazil, B.C. Friends of Children in Canada, Fundación Xana in Spain and the Children's Miracle Network in the U.S.
- Domestic violence and exploitation: A new program with organizations such as Peace House in Utah will provide free temporary housing for people who have left unsafe situations.
- U.S. veterans: Support grows for veterans with serious illness or in intensive treatment, in cooperation with the Fisher House Foundation, the Dream Foundation and Operation Healing Forces.
Airbnb covers operating costs so public donations go entirely to housing
Airbnb.org works with local nonprofits and government partners to identify people in need. It then issues credits so they can book the listing on Airbnb that best fits their needs, such as proximity to family, pet-friendliness or accessibility. Guests supported by Airbnb.org stay free, and hosts are paid for the stay.
Airbnb bears Airbnb.org's operating costs, so 100 percent of public donations go directly to free accommodation. Airbnb earns nothing from stays booked through Airbnb.org. Hosts can also contribute by offering discounted stays or donating part of their Airbnb earnings.
Airbnb flags that the funding depends on booking volumes, which drive the donation total, and on Airbnb.org's ability to launch and scale new programs on schedule.
